Celebrities are also drawn to the sport. Paul Newman, an American actor, was born on January 26, 1925 and passed on, on September 26, 2008. He was also a film director, producer, as well as an Indy car owner. Newman's interest in automobile racing began when he was training to play a race car driver in the '69 film Winning. He had his professional debut in the racing world in 1972. He performed his first race in Thompson California. Newman finished second, in 1979, at the twenty-four hour Le Mans' race. During the event, he drove a Porsche 935. Newman continued his racing avocation; and even co-owned a racing team as noted above. Patrick Dempsey played a doctor on the television show Grey's Anatomy. He also has donned a racing suit and helmet. Dempsey has competed in high-profile racing events. He competed in the Le Mans' event among others. He drove the Mazda RX-8 among other sports cars (all part of a collection). Dempsey owned and performed as lead driver for Dempsey Racing. The team has raced in the American Le Mans' competitions.
